Mahaparinirvana is observed in KAILASA on Karthika Shukla Dvadashi (Karthika – Lunar month; Shukla Dvadashi – 12th day of the waxing moon). It is the day we offer the shrādha, last rites and pinda tarpana (food offering) to all the initiated disciples of Nithyananda sampradaya (Nithyananda tradition) who left the body; all of them who are residing in KAILASA in salokya mukti with Paramashiva (space where Paramashiva – the Supreme Godhead and Cosmic Principle as per Sanatana Hindu Dharma – resides). They are the disciples who lived with integrity to the Guru, Linga (deity) and Sangha (community). We celebrate by giving Maheshwara puja (ritualistic worship to Paramashiva) to all the sanyasis.
The biological father of The Supreme Pontiff of Hinduism (SPH), Sri Nithya Arunachalananda, also an initiated disciple of The SPH, attained Mahasamadhi on 12 Nov 2005. He attained enlightenment at the Sandhya time (the auspicious twilight time of dawn meeting dusk) and left his body 21 minutes after that. The SPH declared that Nov 12th of every year – the death anniversary of Sri Nithya Arunachalananda, will be celebrated as the Mahaparinirvana Day – day of the Enlightened Souls, in memory of all those who attain Enlightenment and leave the body, with the initiation and grace of The SPH.
Maheshwara Puja is celebrated every year on the Lunar calendar anniversary of 12 Nov 2005, the day Sri Sri Sri Nithya Arunachaleshwarananda attained enlightenment and left the body.
The SPH Bhagawan Sri Nithyananda Paramashivam has declared :
“I myself will be sitting and accepting all the Maheshwara puja and giving shrādha, pinda darpana, pitru darpana (pitru – ancestors) to all the devotees, initiated disciples who left the body. Today is the day My father (Sri Sri Sri Nithya Arunachaleshwarananda) left the body and had the Kailaya pathavi (Place in KAILASA), Shiva pathavi (on 12 Nov 2005).”

An offering to the departed souls
Maheshwara Puja is Hinduism’s most ancient ritual prevalent even today in the Vedic tradition. The ritual is offered in the memory of a person who is no more. Known to offer spiritual healing, completion, peace and bliss not only to the departed soul but also to those associated with the soul, Maheshwara puja is offered by the loved ones of the deceased to bring intense completion.
_What is Maheshwara Puja?_
Maheshwara Puja is the offering of Bhiksha, food to the Avatar along with His monastic disciples, Sannyasis and Brahmacharis in the path of Sannyas. In this puja the Sannyasis are treated as Lord Shiva Himself and are offered Bhiksha and fed.
Tradition says offering food to the Avatar is equal to feeding ten thousand hungry. The best place on Planet Earth to give “pinda tharpana” (food for the departed souls, completion with living and those who left the body) is the stomach of a sannyasi
_Why Maheshwara Puja?_
The Hindu scriptures say that it is the son’s duty to serve his parents both when they are alive and after they have passed away by performing the Śrāddha to liberate the departed souls. The Garuda Purana, Brahma Vaivarta Purana, Vayu Purana, Agni Purana, Matsya Purana and Markandeya Purana, all mention the importance of these rites.

The Avatar is all three – Brahma’s Kapala, Kalabhairava’s body, and Vishnu’s feet.
No matter how many births the soul would have taken after leaving the body and no matter if the soul has met the Avatar or not in life, the Avatar can intervene and make His presence available in the departed soul’s life and lead them to Enlightenment.

What is the difference between shraadha and Maheshwara Puja?
In the vedic tradition, rituals such as shraadha and pinda tharpana are also prevalent to offer prayers to the departed. In these rituals, the goal is to bring completion to you, to heal from any pain or suffering you are going through due to departure of the loved one. In Maheshwara Puja, completion is for both you and the departed soul so their next journey is free of karmic baggage. Maheshwara puja can be conducted only in presence of the Avatar who can connect to the departed soul in the cosmos. What more can one do but make sure our loved ones next birth is smooth and best.
Can we request Maheshwara puja for ourselves?
Yes KAILASA accepts requests to conduct Maheshwara Puja for individuals. Please note it is for you only, KAILASA cannot conduct Maheshwara Puja for your family, friends, who are in the body.
I understand the Maheshwara puja is mainly for the departed souls. But will it have any effect on the person who offer?
Basically, Maheshwara puja, more than the departed soul, the component which they left in you gets completed. Please understand, for example if somebody’s father, he left. Now he will already be in another one body if he had a natural death. But, the incompletions he left with you, he will still be suffering with that same pattern in his new life. In the Maheshwara puja when this part of him is completed, suddenly he will be complete with those patterns.
What is the significance of doing pinda tharpana through an incarnation?
First thing, an incarnation is the space of eternal completion. Physically, mentally, spiritually, he is the space of eternal completion. Offering pinda through him means, the Maheshwara Puja, is literally completing with your Pitrus, because, when you offer him, when he accepts or receives the Maheshwara Puja given by you, for those moments he is direct representative of the Pitrus.
Swamiji, you said a person passes away and the being immediately takes another body, but here we do prayers for that being. The being will be celebrating his or her birthday, how will it help by we doing prayers over his death simultaneously?
First understand, all the last rites you do and the celebrations you do, prayers you do, everything is not for that soul, it is for your own completion with that soul. You carry lot of incompletions with that being who left. So you need to do completion again and again with that being. It’s a time you sit and do completion with that being. The incompletions you carry with your parents is the Pitru Dosha. So, the person who leave, leaves the body, immediately takes another one body. Whatever you give – shraddha, pinda tharpana does not reach him. But, it completes you!
